Book Launch - Come celebrate our collective history

The PEI Literacy Alliance is proud to launch a new children’s book, BORN! A Foal, Five Kittens, and Confederationwritten by Deirdre Kessler and illustrated by Brenda Jones. The book tells the story of the Confederation meetings from the point of view of two local children. The children and a young Robert Harris enjoy the exciting sights and sounds during the late summer of 1864 as the delegates and the circus arrive in Charlottetown.

The launch will be at 3 pm on Thursday, August 28that the Confederation Centre Art Gallery. Bring the whole family to this free event. Refreshments will be served.

"The Alliance promotes a culture of literacy and life-long learning. Our vision is that all Islanders are able to participate fully in their work, family and community,” says Literacy Alliance Manager Jinny Greaves. "Celebrating stories is a fun way to engage Islanders in family literacy. This book is a great way for families to learn about our history together.”

The book is written at a grade 3 level and a free copy will be given to every grade 3 student in PEI. 100% of proceeds of the book sales at the launch and through the Alliance’s website will go to their Summer Tutoring Program for Kids. This annual program offers free tutoring to more than 700 elementary-aged students across the Island who struggle with reading, writing and math. Books will be $15 each. Please bring cash or cheque to the launch.

"This new children’s book will be a tremendous addition to the legacy of the 2014 celebrations,” says Minister of Tourism and Culture Robert Henderson. "Not only will it provide children and families with a fun way to improve literacy skills, but it will also give them a sense of the historical importance of the meeting of the Fathers of Confederation.”

BORN! A Foal, Five Kittens, and Confederation was created in partnership with PEI 2014, Acorn Press, Deirdre Kessler and Brenda Jones.

Literacy is a fundamental skill. Currently 43% of working age Islanders lack the reading and writing skills needed to participate fully in our knowledge economy. We must work together to create a culture of literacy and learning for our Island to prosper.
