Family Digital Literacy Project

Supporting parents so they can support their children

The PEI Literacy Alliance is excited to announce its new Family Digital Literacy Project. This project is made possible with generous support from the Telus Atlantic Canada Community Board.

This project focuses on engaging families to learn together with technology while understanding the risks and benefits. "The 21st century has brought about a generation of children that are experiencing digital technology and literacies like no other.” Says Executive Director Jinny Greaves. "Social media will play a big part in our children's lives and many tweens and teens are already on social media sites without their parents’ knowledge. Understanding the risks and benefits of technologies will help parents support their children so they can thrive and make good decisions in our digital-rich world.” Says Greaves.

The Alliance is also creating a small ipad lending library for families. iPads are a great tool for learning. These ipads will be equipped with apps that encourage reading, writing, storytelling and math.

The Alliance will also be hosting workshops that they piloted at their Family Literacy Day Celebration in January. One workshop is for families with young children called, Myths About Using Technology with Children. The other workshop is for families with tweens and teens, called, Cybersafe Kids and Parents. The workshops will be facilitated by expert in the field and families will be able to borrow an ipad if they need one. The Alliance will also reimburse families for childcare and transportation if these are barriers to attending a workshop.

The Alliance is creating a list of interested families. If you are interested in attending a workshop, please contact Jinny at the PEI Literacy Alliance at (902) 368-3620 or jinny@peiliteracy.ca. Workshops will be scheduled for May.

Investing in literacy today will create a strong community tomorrow.
